Transparent pricing is the only automation feature that saves you money before you spend it. If you're buying equipment on price alone, you're not being smart—you're being steered. I've spent nine years handling equipment orders for a mid-sized manufacturer, and I've personally made 23 significant mistakes that cost roughly $127,000 in wasted budget. I know what I'm talking about. That's why, when I'm sourcing an Omron TM collaborative robot or a simple safety relay, I now ask one question before anything else: what's not included?
I learned this the hard way on a TM robot
The quote that changed my process came in Q3 2024. We were buying an Omron TM collaborative robot for a small assembly cell. The base price was the best number on the spreadsheet. In fact, it was almost too good to be true—and that should have been the first red flag.
The base price included the robot arm, the controller, and the pendant. But it didn't include the safety-rated I/O wiring, the flange adapter, the gripper, the light curtain, the E-stop relay, or the programming hours. By the time we put together a complete working cell, the actual cost was 34% higher than the original quote. Was the quote wrong? Technically no. Every missing item had a part number in the catalog. But the vendor was happy to let me think the base price meant "everything needed to run." It didn't.
Omron Japan makes good equipment—I'm not here to trash the hardware. The TM robot's built-in vision and collision detection are genuinely solid. But good hardware can still be buried under a bad procurement process. And bad procurement processes love hidden line items.
Connectors are where transparency goes to die
Here's a detail that sounds small but isn't: connectors. On that same project, we needed 20 M12 connectors for the sensor cluster. The quote said "mating connectors included." What showed up were basic unshielded connectors. We needed IP67-rated, shielded versions for a washdown area. That mistake added $520 and four days to the project.
I want to say the shielded connector cost $42 each, maybe $38—I'd have to check the old PO. Either way, it wasn't in the base quote, because "connector" without a spec is just a word. That's the kind of simplified thinking that kills projects: assuming one connector is the same as another. It isn't. The electrical noise difference between a $9 connector and a $42 connector can shut down a whole line.
The phone number I blocked and the support call I almost missed
The deepest lesson didn't involve wiring at all. While we were commissioning the TM robot, the assigned application engineer started calling me every morning from a number I didn't recognize. I ignored it. Then I blocked it. At 11:47 PM, stuck on a PLC communication issue, I realized I'd cut off the one person who could answer my question. I hear people say, "Just quote the equipment, I'll handle integration myself." I used to say that. The problem is that a robot arm without the surrounding equipment is a statue. You need the safety PLC, the HMI, the power supplies, the fieldbus gateway, the contactors, the cable trays, and, yes, the right connectors. On an average Omron TM collaborative robot project, the arm itself is maybe 40% of the actual budget. A transparent quote doesn't hide that. It puts it right in front of you.

But what about "just get three quotes"?
I'm sure someone will say the answer is more quotes, or that every automation project has too many unknowns to price upfront. I've heard that. But there's a huge difference between "we don't know the conditions in your plant yet" and "we didn't bother to list what we plan to sell you." I'm not asking for a fixed-price guarantee on every cable bracket. I'm asking for the quote to show me what's there and what isn't. That's not unreasonable. It's the difference between a vendor and a partner.
I don't want the lowest quote. I want the quote I can verify. If a vendor lists every connector, every safety device, and every programming hour, I'll take that quote even if it's 10% higher. The transparent quote is the one that ends with no surprises.
