Omron M7 Intelli IT Blood Pressure Monitor: Accuracy, E5 Error Fixes, and Where Omron Is Made

The Omron M7 Intelli IT blood pressure monitor is accurate enough for regular home and workplace use—and the E5 error that makes people think the device has died is, most of the time, a cuff problem you can fix in two minutes. Omron is also a Japanese company, headquartered in Kyoto, but the country on your specific label may not say Japan: depending on model and destination market, it can read “Made in Japan,” “Made in China,” or “Made in Vietnam.” I’ll explain why that’s less important than you think.

A bit of context on who is telling you this. I’m not a cardiologist; I run occupational-health equipment for an industrial group. Since 2019 we’ve bought about 180 Omron monitors for screening programs at plants—maybe 190 if you count spares, I’d need to check procurement records. When nurses send photos of an error screen 12 hours before an event, I’m the one who decides whether to ship a replacement or talk them through a fix. This article is based on that experience, not on marketing materials.

That doesn’t make every reading perfect. Single readings can still be affected by movement, a full bladder, caffeine, or an incorrectly placed cuff. What validation tells you is that the hardware is trustworthy when you follow the rules.

One reason the M7 is easier to trust in practice is the Intelli Wrap cuff. It doesn’t require the tube to be positioned exactly over your brachial artery the way older cuff designs do. That sounds minor, but for untrained users it removes one of the most common sources of reading errors. The M7 also stores separate readings for two users and connects to the Omron app, which makes it much easier to spot trends than handwriting numbers into a notebook.

Was it the right choice to standardize on? I had doubts even after signing the order. The M7 isn’t the cheapest upper-arm monitor Omron sells, and for two weeks I kept asking myself whether I’d over-specified. The first full screening week ended with fewer than 2% re-tests due to suspicious readings. That settled it for me.

I have mixed feelings about wrist monitors, and it’s not because the technology is bad. Some Omron wrist models are clinically validated too. The problem is that wrist measurement demands more discipline, not less.

The sensor sits over the radial artery, and the reading depends heavily on the wrist staying at heart level while you sit still. People tilt, lean, or let the arm rest lower without noticing. Even a few centimetres of height difference shifts the reading, and the result is a number that looks real but isn’t comparable to an upper-arm measurement.

So if someone asks me, “are Omron wrist blood pressure monitors accurate?”, my answer is: the hardware can be, but the human usually isn’t. For a younger person doing a spot check once a week, a validated wrist monitor is better than no monitor. For an older parent, or for screening people who haven’t been trained, I would almost always buy an upper-arm model. That’s why we used the M7 for the workplace stations.

E5 error: what it means and how to fix it

The E5 error appears when the monitor can’t complete a reliable measurement. Users interpret it as “broken unit,” but in our records, most E5 cases are environmental.

Example from March 2024: a nurse sent me a photo of an M7 showing E5 at 18:00, the evening before a big screening. My first reaction was to have a rush replacement sent overnight—then I checked myself and asked her to test with a different cuff, check the air connector, and rewrap. The unit was fine. We avoided an unnecessary replacement because someone took four minutes to troubleshoot.

If you see E5 on an Omron M7 or similar unit, do this in order:

  1. Make sure the cuff tube is pushed firmly into the monitor’s air connector. A loose connection leaks air slowly and causes the error.
  2. Check the cuff itself for damage or wear. If the unit is a few years old and the cuff has been stretched or has tiny leaks, replace the cuff before you judge the monitor.
  3. Wrap the cuff around a bare upper arm, two to three centimetres above the elbow. Clothing, rolled-up sleeves, or a cuff that’s too loose will all throw off the reading.
  4. Sit still, don’t talk, keep your arm supported at heart level and try again.

If the error still appears with a known-good cuff and correct technique, the device may actually need service. That happens, but it’s less common than people think.

Omron switches, and where everything is made

The company behind the M7 is the same Omron that makes industrial safety switches, limit switches, relays, sensors, and PLCs for factory automation. That overlap matters more than it seems at first. The healthcare and industrial divisions use similar quality systems, and it’s one reason we felt comfortable trusting a Japanese brand with medical devices rather than a less established name.

Now the “made in which country” question. Omron was founded in 1933 and is headquartered in Kyoto, Japan. But a Japanese headquarters is not the same as Japanese manufacturing. Over the years Omron has built plants around Asia. We’ve received M7 units labelled “Made in Vietnam,” and other Omron lower-cost models labelled “Made in China.” Japanese-market devices are often labelled “Made in Japan.” This is why internet answers are so contradictory: everyone is describing the specific model they happen to be holding.

Does this affect the accuracy argument? In our experience, no. A clinically validated model stays validated regardless of which factory produced it, because the validation applies to the design and quality control process. If someone is charging you extra because a unit is “Made in Japan,” ask yourself whether that premium is about the label or actual documented validation.

Where my advice has limits

The E5 checks above are for the common pattern where the monitor hardware is okay. They do not replace actual service, and they should not be read as a repair manual. If you’re outside warranty, search by the device model number and follow Omron’s support instructions for your region. If you’re buying for an older person, someone with arrhythmia, or as part of a diagnosed condition, talk to a clinician first. When in doubt, choose an upper-arm clinically validated monitor over a wrist unit.

To be fair, a wrist monitor is still better than no monitor if getting readings is genuinely hard with an upper-arm cuff. Just don’t pretend the right answer on paper is the same as the right answer in practice.

If you have a specific Omron model in your hand, three habits will take you far: check that it appears on an independent clinically validated list, choose upper-arm unless there’s a strong reason not to, and treat an E5 error as a cuff warning before treating it as a failure. It has kept our screening events running, and it will keep your home readings honest too.
